Stephen Greene 'Liebesnacht', 1959

$22,000.00

Stephen Greene (American, 1918-1999) began his career as a figural painter but by the late 1950s had made the radical transition to nonrepresentational art.. He disliked labels and refused to call himself an Abstract Expressionist but in this 1959 work titled 'Liebesnacht' he uses jewel-toned color and abstract form to create a strong, expressive statement. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Tate Gallery in London.
