Robert Motherwell (America, 1915-1991) was a pioneer in the Abstract Expressionist art movement which flourished in New York City in the mid 20th Century. As a painter, printmaker and collagist his influence helped to move the focus of the international art world from Europe to North America. This 1983 etching, 'Mulligan's Tower', numbered 11/32, was inspired by an earlier sketch and references James Joyces 'Ulysses', a literary work which had a significant influence on Motherwell's life and career. The sheet size is 17 x 13 inches with a frame size of 19.5 x 15.25 inches. Robert Motherwell's work is in the permanent collections of major museums around the world, among them the Museum of Modern Art (NYC), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC), the Whitney Museum of American Art (NYC), the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art (Washington DC), the Menil Collection (Houston), the Kunstmuseum Basel (Switzerland), Musée National d'Art Moderne Centre Pompidou (Paris) and the Hara Museum (Tokyo).
