Robert Goodnough 'Development in Grey' Sculpted Wool Tapestry

Robert Goodnough (American, 1917-2010) began painting during in the first wave of the revolutionary, mid-20th-century 'New York School' of abstract art In this hand-knotted and sculpted wool interpretation of his work titled 'Development in Grey', Goodnough abandons the exuberant colors of his early years and utilizes the monochrome tonalities of black and white. His woven signature is on the lower right. A canvas sleeve is attached to the backing to facilitate hanging. Robert Goodnough's art is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian American Museum of Art.
