Jan de Swart (1908–1987) began his career as a carver of ecclesiastical furniture in his native Holland before emigrating to the US in 1929 at the age of 21. Landing in California he rejected the traditional Bohemian lifestyle of an artist, preferring to work in the quiet solitude of his studio in the hills north of LA. Equally accomplished as an artist, a craftsman and an inventor (he held over 100 patents) this little bookstand, with its asymmetrical frieze-work and innovative page holder, exemplifies all three.
