Max Kuehne (1880-1968) was born in Germany in 1880 and immigrated with his family to the United States in 1894. In 1907 he began his formal art training in New York City, studying with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. During the Depression Kuehne expanded his oeuvre to include the decorative arts, designing, carving and gilding frames, small pieces of furniture and decorative screens, one of which this 1934 rendering represents.
